Mississippi truck crash escaped monkey

A Mississippi mother shot and killed the final escaped research monkey after a semi-truck crash near Heidelberg, Mississippi, released several animals into the wild. The October 28th crash involved a transport of monkeys being used for research purposes.

The Crash and Monkey Escape

According to reports from 7 ABC News, the semi-truck accident caused multiple monkeys to escape into the surrounding area. Initial fears spread that the monkeys might be infected with COVID-19 or hepatitis, but Tulane University later clarified that, while the monkeys were aggressive, they were not carrying any contagious diseases.

Five monkeys were shot immediately following the crash, while thirteen others were successfully recovered and transported to their intended research destination.

A Mother’s Split-Second Decision

On Sunday, November 2nd, local resident Jessica Bond Ferguson spotted the last missing monkey in her front yard after her son saw it running across the property. Concerned for her family’s safety, Ferguson contacted local police before taking action.

“I did what any other mother would do to protect her children,” Ferguson told 7 ABC. “I shot at it and it just stood there. I shot again, and that’s when he fell.”

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks later recovered the monkey’s body.

Community Concerns

Residents in the area expressed concern about the escaped monkeys roaming near neighborhoods where children play. Ferguson said she doesn’t regret her decision, emphasizing safety:

“If it attacked somebody’s kid, and I could have stopped it, that would be a lot on me,” she said.
